You will be given a VFX production level pipeline and learn workflow habits and techniques for staying on track during game development from concept to completion. We will create Master Materials and Assets in a way to maintain speed and quality while in production.
Learn how to build out deeper levels of control in Niagara through the use of Niagara Module scripts and User Parameters to interface with Houdini Point Cache Data, Unreal Materials, Level Sequences and Blueprints.
Learn how to use Level Sequences for gameplay interaction and during cinematics to implement your VFX, Interface with Blueprint Logic and keep your FX going when transitioning back into gameplay.
Use Houdini, Substance Designer and EmberGen to create VFX Assets with iteration, speed and flexibility in mind. Use these tools to integrate between each other and Unreal for greater leverage and power in your VFX creation process.
We’ll learn how to climb the mountain of crafting VFX for large game moments in a way that will keep morale high and allow us to hit tight deadlines. This will also help establish a focus on maintaining cohesive and consistent Art Direction throughout production while satisfying gameplay and design.
We are going to dive head first into this course by treating it like a real game production.
You will be given a project that already has gameplay logic, the Hero character, the main prop, an environment, the cinematic blockouts and temporary placeholder VFX. Then you will be briefed on the Lore of the game and the VFX tasks needed for this EPIC hero moment.
We will move through each week in a way that will help you stay focused, build your morale, allow you to maintain consistency in Art Direction through iterative asset creation techniques and keep you on track to ship on time with High-End AAA level quality.
This course will give you the understanding you need to collaborate with multiple disciplines in a production environment by navigating Blueprints for gameplay logic, Animation Montages, Level Sequences for both gameplay and cinematics, 3D prop mesh and material manipulation, advanced Niagara systems with Houdini, Blueprint and Sequencer integration and experience with building tools and advanced asset creation pipelines in industry software like Houdini, Substance Designer and EmberGen. This course is loaded with content and has everything you will need to become a Real-Time VFX Wizard and help you enjoy a long career in the Video Game Industry!

Jesse Henning is a Senior VFX Artist in the Video Game Industry where he currently works for Wizards of the Coast at Atomic Arcade bringing the world of G.I. Joe and Snake Eyes to life. He is a self-taught artist and has worked on around 6 titles including Conan Exiles, Dune Awakening (Briefly) and Destroy All Humans 2.
Prior to game development, Jesse had over a decade of filmmaking, 3D modeling/animation and motion graphics experience. He worked as a freelance 3D animator where he tackled projects from concept to completion for major commercial companies like Toshiba, Lenovo and Cree Lighting. He has solely been an Unreal developer throughout his time in the game industry and has developed battle tested, industry level practices for creating High-End AAA VFX for games in multiple production environments.
Jesse has a strong, passionate focus on helping lead others toward their goals of industry success and longevity by teaching foundational principles, providing production focused techniques and giving insight into developing pipelines and workflows that will keep you on track throughout your projects development.
